In order to realise and contribute to the SDG of achieving gender equality and women empowerment by 2030, it is imperative to begin the change at home, i.e. India should make the objective of eliminating gender inequality and addressing the obstacles faced by women in their pursuit to empowerment, central to its national development planning and budgeting. This Viewpoint paper identifies causes behind accelerated gender disparity in the country and their impact on women empowerment.
